The canon law of the Catholic Church requires that clerics "observe perfect and perpetual continence for the sake of the kingdom of heaven". Inthe Church clarified that men with "deeply rooted homosexual tendencies" cannot be ordained. Nevertheless, a senior Vatican official confirmed a report in Corriere della Sera that gay men who are closeted and chaste abstain from sexual activity for at least three years will still be allowed to become priests, and others have argued that the church would be unable to enforce an outright ban even if it tried.
Lisa McClain does not work for, consult, own shares in or receive funding from any company or organisation that would benefit from this article, and has disclosed no relevant affiliations beyond their academic appointment. In the United States, most adults state that religion plays an important role in their lives and claim a religious affiliation. For gay, bisexual, and transgender persons GBTthe story is unique because their sexual and gender identity is not accepted by most religions. We have no reliable figures on just how many priests in the Catholic Church are gay. The Vatican has conducted many studies on its own clergy but never on this subject. The consensus in my own research over the past few months converged on around 30 to 40 percent among parish priests and considerably more than that — as many as 60 percent or higher — among religious orders like the Franciscans or the Jesuits. This fact hangs in the air as a giant, unsustainable paradox.

A few years ago the Ramsey Colloquium—a group of Christian and Jewish scholars—published a sharp critique of "the gay and lesbian cause" which they titled "The Homosexual Movement. It hardly needs to be said that entering the debate in this way exposed the Ramsey Colloquium to angry denunciation and was, for some of its members, an act of courage. My purpose is not to criticize the declaration's reasoning but to draw your attention to one paragraph as the starting point for our conversation:.

Naked but for the towel around his waist, a man of a certain age sat by himself, bent slightly forward as if praying, in a corner of the sauna at a gym in central Rome. I had not met this man before, but as I entered the sauna, I thought I recognized him from photographs. My friends told me that this priest was gay, politically savvy, and well connected to the gay Church hierarchy in Rome.
Around 20 Cistercian monks will be transferred to other monasteries around Italyafter it was found that their "lifestyles" were "not in keeping" with Church doctrine, bringing to an end a monastic presence on the site that dates back five centuries. They reportedly demonstrated "questionable behaviour and a lack of moral discipline" — a possible allusion to homosexual relations, which the Church regards as a sin. The historic monastery is attached to the Church of the Holy Cross, which was founded in AD by the mother of the Emperor Constantine, St Helena, who is said to have brought back the relics from the Holy Land. In recent years it has established a reputation for publicity-seeking stunts and the courting of wealthy celebrities, including Gloria Estefan and Madonna.
